ACT Workshop:

Name: Robyn D. Walser, PhD

Title:  Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: A Flexible, Process-Based Path to Change

ABSTRACT:

Change is a natural part of life, yet many people come to therapy when habitual struggles leave them feeling stuck or cut off from what matters. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers a flexible, evidence-based approach for supporting growth and well-being. Rooted in behavioral science, ACT cultivates psychological flexibility, the capacity to stay present with difficult thoughts and emotions while taking values-guided action.

This workshop explores how ACT helps clients move beyond avoidance, foster self-compassion, and reconnect with purpose. Rather than trying to eliminate painful experiences, ACT supports a new relationship with inner life—one that makes space for discomfort without letting it dictate behavior. Participants will learn how ACT processes, mindfulness, defusion, acceptance, values clarification, and committed action, can be woven into client-centered practice. Emphasis will be placed on creating an authentic, collaborative therapeutic environment that honors each client’s unique context. ACT will be presented as a guide for helping people build meaningful lives, not by erasing pain, but by carrying it with dignity while stepping toward what matters most.
